Macadamia Industry and Market Information
The peak body for the macadamia industry in this country is the Australian Macadamia Society (AMS) whose head office is located in Lismore, NSW. The General Manager of the AMS is Mr Andrew Heap, and the Society is contactable through its website: http://www.macadamias.org
The Australian macadamia industry is centred on the northern rivers region of NSW, however there are now substantial plantings in south east Queensland on the Sunshine Coast hinterland and in the Bundaberg area.
After Australia, the next biggest macadamia producers are the USA (Hawaii), South Africa, Kenya, Malawi, Guatemala and Brazil.
The AMS forecast for the 2007 Australian crop is in the region of 38,000 tonnes of nut-in-shell, somewhat less than last years harvest and substantially down on the 2005 record crop of 45,000 tonnes. Wet conditions at the time of flower set seem to be chief reason for the reduced crop this year.
The global market for macadamias took a severe downturn following the large crop of 2005 which coincided with record high prices. By mid 2007 the market appears to have passed the lowest point and is expected to recover slowly over the next eighteen months.
The United States is the largest market for macadamias globally. Around one fifth of Australia's crop is exported to America each year with similar portions shipped to Europe, Japan and China, and a growing quantity consumed here in Australia.
