Australian Pecans

The oldest trees on the Australian continent date back to the early 20th century however these are not part of the commercial harvest. The Pecan industry in Australia was established in the late 1960s by the Stahmann family who migrated to Toowoomba from their home in New Mexico where they have been farming Pecans since the 1930s.

Nowadays Pecan farms can be found from Mundubbera in central Queensland to the Hunter Valley in NSW and in parts of Western Australia. Although the harvest may measure up to 5000 tonnes of nut-in-shell, Australian production still only constitutes around 2% of the global crop. The most common pecan varieties grown in Australia are the Witchita and the Western Schley.

Pecans were all but unknown in the Australian marketplace before the 1980s, but have gradually grown in popularity as they have achieved greater prominence. Their excellent 'meaty' taste, firm but yielding texture and supreme versatility make them an easy choice for snacking, baking or savoury cooking.
